The Cathedral Windows

The Diocese of Baker was established in 1903 and the dedication of the Cathedral was in 1908, without the stained glass windows.

In May of 1923, (102 years ago) eight windows were installed in the Cathedral.  These windows were designed, built and installed by Povey Brothers of Portland, Oregon.  The Povey Brothers were known as “The Tiffany of the Northwest, their windows were known for having unequaled quality and beauty, and have had a lasting impact on this artistic field. In 1929, Povey Brothers completed their last window.

In 1958, the sanctuary was renovated and The Coronation of Mary and the Descent of the Holy Spirit, were added at a cost of $8,100 each.  A Rose window dedicated to the theme of the Sacred Heart and is above the Descent of the Holy Spirit and Rose window above the Coronation includes the symbolic appellations of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  The cost of the Rose windows was $2,800 each. In 1965 two smaller stained-glass windows were installed beneath the choir loft. These windows were designed and installed by Rambusch located in Jersey City, New Jersey. They have been in business since 1898

Windows 1 thru 6 were $1,000 each and #1 & #14 were $500 each.

  • Assumption was donated by James Murtha
  • Annunciation was donated by the Povey Brothers Studio
  • The Presentation was donated by Bridget Kane
  • Christ with the Children donated by the pupils of St. Francis Academy
  • The Agony donated by Mrs. Henry Donavan
  • The Crucifixion donated by St. Francis de Sales Altar Society
  • The Sacred Heart and St. Francis de Sales donated by the parish.

Over time with changing weather (summer to winter), the loss of the glazing and the weight of the windows themselves have caused enough wear that it is time to preserve these beautiful pieces of art and history.  To do so the work will be done in stages and the initial stage will come at a cost of $168,600.  Some funds have been set aside for this project, and there are plans for fund raisers in the near future.  If you would like to sponsor a window, have any questions or would like more information please contact the office.
